Naked Fusion 33 1/3-The Final Insult

Post by Jokeyman123 »

2 things I remember from old posts-and old posters I guess-from 2009-the poor soul who discovered the black keys 'clack" against the metal top cover-and I noticed he never figured out what was wrong, or how to solve this problem. AND

2) I think Jesse it was you who mentioned awhile ago-that putting hinges on the Fusion's top cover might be a good idea-should have done it 3 dis-assemblies ago.

BECAUSE-after (I thought finally) putting the Fusion back together for the last time-after injuring my finger (see below picture) modifying the TP20 keyboard to work which it does-was sadly reminded about how the key assembly was-from the factory-mismatched to its mounting holes in the bottom case-there are 12 large screws I had to offset-again see pics. I already posted last year how I needed to use a high-speed metal drill bit to re-drill the key assembly mounting holes in the bottom case shell-in order to be able to shift the entire key assembly forward-away from the top cover to stop the backs of the keys from hitting the case. Oddly, this happened with my one 8HD and not the other.

Apparently, I'd not drilled all the holes, and used a slightly smaller diameter drill bit originally. For some reason my original metal drill work still did not fix this problem with the TP20 transplant. I drilled the remaining holes that were the original smaller diameter-and re-drilled all the holes using a larger 1/2" diameter drillbit "in situ". Removing all the bottom screws allows for lifting the key assembly enough to drill from the outside bottom of the case without hitting the inside threaded screw sockets.

It is extremely important-notice the three screws towards the back-that hold three of the rubber feet underneath-fasten the key assembly to the metal frame that supports the internal IC boards-thus going through 2 layers of steel-these shifted the back of the key assembly lower when I tightened these-and caused the black keys to hit against the top cover-changed the angle of the keys just enough to cause this. Had to make sure I tightened the front row of screws first-to keep the key assembly from shifting back into where it was before. I also had to use washers as tightening these front row screws would slide them back into the recessed metal part of the bottom case, and defeat the offset-would shift the key assembly back to where it was originally-notice the offset. A mechanical monster defect.

I am posting again-I bet there are 8HD Fusions sitting unused in 2023 because of these very problems-which I also bet was part of the reason the Fusion failed in the marketplace-these gross defects are unforgivable-considering the original cost to the "end-user" and how much time and work it must have taken to manufacture the 8HD's in the first place-how something as gross as key assemblies that did not fit properly-and were mismatched for dynamics between the black and white keys-was not detected and remedied. It must not have been, since I have discovered more recent keyboard workstations exhibiting the same dynamics mismatch from other manufacturers that must have these same defective TP40's inside (mish-mosh more like it). If you have arrived here at this post, now you know what you have to do if your Fusion has these defects-if you care to bother which I could understand if you don't. and why this post is titled.....
