middle c almost dead - FM program

Post by abruzzi »

sorry to make my first post a question, but I recently got a 6HD, and was going through it trying to learn. I created a quick 2 op FM patch that actually sounds kind of nice (it needs a bit of work in the upper registers). I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but the sound is consistent up and down the keyboard except middle c is dull and almost inaudible. The intricacies of the mod section may be lost to me, and the manual it a bit obtuse. I've attached the program as a zip file. I'd welcome any idea what I'm doing wrong.

Hi abruzzi, and welcome to the forums . . .

Does your 6HD behave normally when you play the installed programs? i.e. NO problem with that middle C?

I only ask, because when I bought my 6HD, one key didn't sound at all - and it turned out to be a keyswitch that

had not been bedded down properly. When this was corrected, all was well . . .

If it plays fine normally, then I would suggest it is an "unfortunate" combination of parameters in your patch . . . .

I have never programmed the Fusion - so this is based purely on sound-tech.

It could be that somewhere in your patch, there might be a cancellation going on at the frequency of Middle C.

I don't know FM enough to suggest where that may be, but try altering ONE THING in your patch and check

that middle C and see if anything has changed . . . . ?

That's all I can think of. Someone who has done more programming of FM can most likely advise if this is

nonsense, and suggest a better strategy . . .

There is a similar problem with a piano patch from the Klaus Schulze library, due to the keytrack modulating the volume.

After turning everything on and off, it turns out I added a mod slot that was supposed to do filter key tracking. Apparently I did it wrong.

Source: Keytrack
Index: 1 semitone=100%

Destination: Filt Cutoff

Type: Multiplicative
Amount: +100%
(8 octaves+4 semi)

If you want to do 1:1 filter tracking on the Fusion, how do you set it up?

I'm not sure, but according to manual page 242, I guess you should put keytrack index = 5 or 8 octaves = 100%.

And you should change the type from Multiplicative to Additive, because keytrack gives modulation 0 for middle C.
Reason is that if you multiply a number with 0, you get result 0. Cutoff freq 0 means no sound.
Amount could remain 100%.

In addition, the filter cutoff should be around middle value, let's say at ... 630 Hz?

Thanks, I didn’t see that in the manual. I’ll give it a try.

You're welcome.
You can also inspire from the existing programs, many of them have such a keytrack-filter modulation.
