I just checked the battery voltage in my non working Fusion 8HD, it's about 12 years old.
It started out at 2.88 volts and very slowly creeped up to 3.03 volts.
A new battery will have 3.3 volts, when the old battery voltage drops below 3.0 volts it is time to replace it.

The Fusion uses this battery - Panosonic BR2325-HGN 3V Lithium 165mAh Standard Fusion Battery Primary (Non-Rechargeable)
http://www.alliedelec.com/panasonic-br2 ... /70196895/

I am going to order two new batteries for my Fusion 8HD's. I am going to go with the BR2330A-GA which has a higher capacity and hopefully longer life.
Panosonic BR2330A-GA 3V Lithium 255mAh higher capacity Battery Primary (Non-Rechargeable)
http://www.alliedelec.com/panasonic-br2 ... /70196829/

The BR2330A-GA is has the same dimentions as the BR2325 except it is 0.5 mm thicker.

I need to find out if 3 volt power needs to be supplied to the main PCB while the battery is being replaced?

Just a reminder our Fusion's are 10 to 13 years old and if you have not replaced the battery in your Fusion you should consider doing this ASAP

Why did not Alesis use a battery holder? Image

I don't feel comfortable approaching a motherboard with a soldering iron.

That's why my TX81Zs still have their 30 years old batteries. One has even leaked a bit and I had to clean the board, but they are still working and they are still keeping their internal (i.e. user) programs.

I don't know why, but if you have a tech remove the battery for you they could probably install different battery holder, but then you would need the battery without the attached tabs :)

On the bright side having to change the battery once every 10 or 12 years isn't so bad :)

That's a good idea Image

I replaced the batteries in several Yamaha instruments which have a battery holder, it was a piece of cake (they use CR2032 batteries).
They are older than my Fusion and it still seems incomprehensible why Alesis did not use a battery holder!

I have just checked: BR2325 and BR2330 batteries are available without tabs.

If you are fitting a holder - be sure to buy the correct holder for the battery you're going to use.

i.e. a 2032 holder won't take a 2025 battery . . . . (for instance).

Re: no holder in the Fusion . . . . I would guess it was more expensive to fit a holder?

(=an extra component in the BOM)

Just a question: can i see in diagnostic mode what the status of the internal battery is?

I don't believe there is a battery check function in the diagnostics, I checked my fusion battery when I had the unit open.

An external jack to connect a voltmeter to would be nice :)

Generally, the Fusion will suddenly not know what day it is . . . .

Date and time will be gone, and there will probably be garbage in the display . . . .

You'll need to do a master reset (to begin with) and then go through the settings you may have altered

(in the <Global> section), and restore them to the settings YOU chose . . .

Might be good to run through the diagnostics too . . .

I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS - so there's a (?) about the Serial Number, which is viewable

in one of the menus. - i.e. if the Cmos battery dies, is it lost?

For obvious reasons this is not user alterable, but it can be re-entered with a special gizmo

that is described in the SERVICE MANUAL.

IIRC - this gizmo can be "made" by the user - and connects midi IN to midi OUT for certain operations . .

If the Serial number issue becomes problematic - you may need to contact Alesis/InMusic

That is a little worrisome. :(

I will probably replace it at some point before it dies and put a parallel supply on the contact points while replacing the battery. I will of course replace it with a simple CR2032 socket on some extension wires and locate it in a much more accessible spot. Since the current levels are so miniscule you don't have to worry about extension wires causing a voltage drop.

Did I ever mention I hate opening the Fusion? :-)

I suppose you could always put a piano hinge on the back and a couple tool box flip lock tabs on the front :)

It's just that each half is so heavy it requires very careful manipulation so as not to damage internals during disassembly and assembly.

It's closer to working on a car. :-)
