Going backwards to go forwards. Joe Zawinul-I was (and am) a big fan of this synth/music pioneer, for many reasons. In trying to emulate his signature Fender Rhodes heavily phased sound, such as on "The Juggler" from the Heavy Weather album and many others, haven't gotten there. I know he used a Mutron bi-phase as part of it, and have tried various Fusion efx settings, but still not quite there. rotary speaker, dual phase shifters-but i can't tell which Rhodes sound he used underneath-I think the key must have been the phaser which seems to produce almost ring-modulated overtones. if anyone has any ideas (short of buying a Mutron or one of the cheap Behringer clones) post me.
A pleasant surprise-again trying to duplicate a Joe Zawinul sound-I stumbled across one in the Fusion that was perfect-2 simple sawtooth/triangle waves very slightly detuned from each other with a little chorusing to create a mild phasing effect captured his solo synth sound on this same track (the Juggler). I added a fast LFO to the wheel to duplicate the fast tremelo he liked to use. I know he favored Oberheims, Arps-he was a master of using the simpler synth tones available back then with many outboard processors.
