External LCD display for the Fusion

Post by Jesse »

I received the USB to VGA adapter and after installing the driver for the computer it worked just fine, but since there is no way for us to install drivers for the fusion I could not get it to work on the Fusion :(

The next thing I will try is to make an adapter to connect the needed contacts from the 20 pin display connector to a VGA connector or maybe I can find a larger LCD graphics display screen.

Any insight about getting an external display to work on the Fusion should be discussed here :)

Alesis Fusion affectionately known as "The Beast"

Yes, we know what power feeds & signals are being sent to and from the 20 pin connector.

I have found what looks to be compatible 240x128 LCD graphic 7.5 inch display, about 1.5 times the size of the Fusions display, not a monster, but larger :)
This display has 22 connection points, but two of them are for power to the LED back light.

I know this thread is old-but given all the new video cam conferencing I've been doing lately-I've been working on videocam lessons for a friend now 8 states away from me and just thought of this-a simple, crude solution for those of us who might need a bigger screen-although the Fusion is certainly better than many...how about a simple webcam-hooked to a tablet or laptop-pointed directly at the screen-voila-instant 10"-17" screen depending on your tablet or laptop. Since one would need a separate adjustable video cam to get the right angle for the LCD would have to be done like that, can't think of a way to do this with a built in cam from a tablet or phone as the angle of the screen coincides with the plane of the camera. I think any usb camera would work, might need a mini-tripod. Plus-a suitable computer-I have older Motion tablets-Windows OS that work well with a videocam, and an older Sahara Netslate-all 12" screens.

There are quite a few freeware videocam software packages that are simple enough-I've used the Logitech software designed for the Logitech videocam I've been using but there are plenty of others. I will try this today and report back.

This screen projection does work-not elegantly-camera has to be right in front of screen-but is legible on computer tablet screen-and does blow it up-might kludge a custom way to do this-maybe one of my pro cameras on a tripod overhead would work better-but after looking this over on a larger screen-the Fusion LCD screen is really not such a bad size-even the newest color touchscreens after all are no bigger on this-the Montage, Roland Phantoms, Korgs, Casio PX560-at some point too large is cumbersome. Complete touchscreen control-with a computer-size screen-but then for live playing, NG. for programming and other controls-to set up for live playing, not going to happen-without having Fusion's sysex design/messages even an advanced developer couldn't do it. The website www.ctrlr.org has complete software front-ends even for older equipment-and modules to design a remote computer-controlled custom panel or panels-similar to the work Steve did with Hollow Sun and his virtual controllers. Now even the Hantronix display looks like it won't be back any time soon. My screens are good-but one never knows.

This is the Famous example of an external display . . . .

I did contact Erik, but he said that Alesis supplied the Fusion "ready- modded" and he just brought his own material along

and loaded it up for the demo . . . .

If you look, you can see a mysterious ribbon cable coming out of the rear of the Fusion and disappearing below the "Bench" . . .

So I guess it IS possible . . . .

It would be nice if we could just piggy back the ribbon connector to the Fusions display and connect it to a large LCD display :)

I will be disassembling the Fusion with the bad mainboard again soon. I will study this connector's schematic and connections-see if i can determine the pin designations and see if i can match this to a known video/vga circuit-I have been studying IC kits online that adapt computer LCD screens to VGA/USB/HDMI inputs-without the rest of the computer-sort of backwards to what I'd attempt to do-but am trying to see how these data and power lines coincide with the Fusion LCD ribbon connector-it is possible I suppose, to create a piggyback arrangement for either the built in LCD display or an external display-but given the probable power requirements-I would think this is not a hot-swap or plug and play scenario. Onward and upward in the New Year, Happy New Year Jesse and many more. Stay safe and well. Need to play more music-not done yet.
